This mug was glazed with an iron (tenmoku) glaze, hand painted with wax resist then dipped in a white glaze. The two glazes interact causing reddish brown speckles to show through the cloudly white surface. The wax painted design reveals rich iron tones underneath and records expressive brush strokes resembling the rolling movement of smoke plumes.
